Lots-O-Links #23

This is the twenty-third edition of Lots-O-Links, posts where I randomly share links. Fun, huh? I can now call it the weekly post that two people have gone on record as liking. Pretty cool!

David Knight’s spiritual/inspirational book I AM I: The In-Dweller of your Heart has launched (I missed the official date – pooey). If you like spiritual books I highly recommend this one as it has many good passages and messages in it.

Stephannie Beman has a new short story available for $.99 called Love is blind. (from Smashwords) – Tarma is a sea-nymph who believes she’s in love with the daemon-god Hades. The only glitch is that he doesn’t seem to know she exists; and the harder she tries to catch his attention the further he runs. Tarma will soon learn how blind her love has been when she seeks the Goddess of Love for help.

Also in ebooks, Docile, the erotic short fiction by Darkmind, is now on available for free on Smashwords.

S.M. Muse’s new novel, Heir of Nostalgia, is available on Amazon (from Amazon)  At eleven years old Phillip had everything a boy could want. In less than a year all that changed when his father went missing. At 13, the privileged life Phillip once knew is gone. He is homeless, hungry, and heartbroken. He’s been living on the streets of New York ever since that fateful night, and the only thing that keeps him going is the thought of vengeance. He’s looking for the man he feels is responsible for his father’s disappearance, the man with the silver singing spurs. Will a Riot Grrl called Maggie, who claims she can talk to angels, be able to help Phillip? Will a murder of ravens masquerading as teenage thugs defeat them? Or are there stronger forces at work?

IN more writers worth reading, Rodney C. Johnson adds vampires to his repertoire Well, kind of. Go check it out and see what I mean.  On a side note he has fun illustrated covers.

In blogging news, Jonathan Harvey, author of Shades of Plaid and the writer of the Terrible Turtle Conspiracy webcomic is blogging again. Check out his introductory post on his Updates in Plaid blog.

Barbara G. Tarn won a kreative Award.

Angie has an excellent blog with tips on how to take self portraits.

And Stephannie and Ruth Nordin have been having too much fun.  Check out Ruth’s letter to Hades, and then read the rebuttal/tabloid article  “is Persephone Happy in the Underworld” on Stephannie’s blog. Of course, after reading Ruth’s letter, her own characters have gone on strike.  Then the mythological tabloid shed a little light on the situation.

In interestingness, did you know that Iran has a lot of ninjas? No, seriously. Even more interesting, they’re women! Check it out!

If you have any links to share please mail them to me at Joleene (at) JoleeneNaylor (dot) com or else post them in the comments! And that’s all I have right now. Have a great week everyone!

Claudius now on Smashwords!

The seventh Vampire Morsel, Claudius, is now available as a free read on Smashwords.com.

Short Story. The seventh in a collection called Vampire Morsels about different vampires from the Amaranthine universe. Claude wants revenge against his father; a nobleman who abandoned him as a baby, and covets his father’s charge, the beautiful Arowenia. Now that he’s been given the gift of immortality, he has the power to take both. You can also find Claudius in Shades of Gray by Joleene Naylor

(I have to admit this is my favorite of the ones on Smashwords!)

It’s still pending approval for the extended distribution, but once it is approved it will filter through to Barnes & Noble, Kobo, etc.  Mark Coker recently posted a blog discussing improved approvals and shipping to be implemented this year, so hopefully it will go through quickly. I know those guys are pretty busy over there!

I am working on Kariss’s story right now and hopefully will have it done and posted in the next couple of days.

Bethina on Smashwords

The sixth Vampire Morsel is now up on Smashwords as a free read!

Short Story. The sixth in a collection about different vampires from the Amaranthine universe. The year is 1947. With her tuberculosis getting worse, Bethina’s only future is to languish in a TB San. Then the mysterious family she works for offers her a full time position, one that will change her life forever. You can also find Bethina in the novel Shades of Gray.

Claudius will be next on Smashwords, as soon as I get a chance to do some editing, and a rough draft of Jesslynn will be coming to this blog sometime. I am hoping later this week, but  I make no promises.

On Smashwords and Amazon

Amazon has created a new program called kdp select.  The jist is that participating authors have a chance for extra money if their books are borrowed through the Amazon prime library lending program. To participate your books must be exclusive to Amazon.  This means they can’t be for sale anywhere else and you can’t put excerpts on your own sites or blogs.

I will not be joining this.

To do so would be the same as telling nook owners “sorry but you don’t matter.” And I have too many readers who own nooks (this was a surprise to me too!) I most certainly would never tell any reader that they did not matter. That they are willing to churn through my drivel makes them amazing people that I’m so, so grateful for – no matter what format they read it on.

The second reason has to do with loyalty. Smashwords was my first ebook experience. I’ve watched as it has grown over the last three years under the guidance of Mark Coker who has worked hard at negotiating distribution deals, updating the site and dealing with a lot of frustrating and sometimes annoying authors (I’m sure he’s dealt with nice ones too). I have mailed smashwords  at random times and always gotten a fast – and personal – response – even after midnight. I can’t say the same for Amazon. Smashwords has FAQs, free downloadable how to’s and will even send you a list of people who do formatting and cover work.  Amazon has a crappy forum that I can never find answers on and offers covers for 200$ (most of which anyone on the smashwords list would do for 75$ or less.) Smashwords allows you the option to make your work free. Amazon will only make it free if you can show that it is free somewhere else or you join the kdp select group. Smashwords offers multiple formats right on their page (including kindle’s .mobi files) and distributes – free of charge – to several other retailers (B&N, kobo, diesel, apple etc.). Amazon offers kindle files only. (admittedly with an app you can read those on a phone or PC.)

That’s not to say smashwords is perfect, though their faults lie in their sudden expansion. Because of the ebook publishing boom, they’ve been flooded with books that have to be processed. This means what once took a week now takes a month. And while I am as impatient as everyone else, I understand.  I used to make  two covers a month. I was lightning fast. Now I handle twenty or more. I’m not so fast now. If I were to expand and hire someone else to take half or more I could be, just like if smashwords hired a few hundred(or more) people like Amazon has they could be faster. though, frankly, I’m not sure I want them to turn into Amazon junior.

Maybe I am naive and lack the proper business mind set, but smashwords has always felt like “real people” to me, while Amazon is just a corporation. I have no loyalty to Amazon. If someone insults it I don’t feel the desire to defend it. Amazon only wants profits. They use me to get a minuscule amount and I use them back. Childish or not, smashwords feels more like a partner. I want them to succeed because I believe in what they’re doing. I am an indy or self pubbed who proudly does it all myself – just like smashwords does it themselves. We’re on the same wavelength. I expect amazon to screw me over. I trust smadhwords not to. Maybe there’s no room loyalty in business, but frankly that’s not the kind of business I want to be in. That’s why I went Indy in the first place.

Ties of Blood on Barnes & Noble

Ties of Blood is now on the Nook:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/ties-of-blood-joleene-naylor/1106014034

Funny story, though.

So last Thursday I mailed Smashwords, about why the book was still not up a month later. They answer promptly and said it would likely go out next week (yesterday) and would take two weeks after that to show up.  At that point it was another three weeks, so i said “forget this!” and joined pubit and uploaded my first book directly. Here’s where it gets funny. Because of my annoying hyphenated name (it seems like a good idea, ladies, but it’s’ not. No one is equipped to deal with it.) My account was pending until Wednesday, when it was approved any my book began processing. Today, it is published – and now for the hilarious part – meanwhile the Smashwords version magically showed up and is also there! Ha! So there are two identical versions – one through pubit and one through smashwords! Insane, I know. But anyway, it;s there, so I guess that’s what counts.

Anyway, go get it for your nook!

Benjamin on Smashwords

The fifth Vampire Morsel is now up on Smashwords as a free read!

“Short Story. Part of a collection about different vampires from the Amaranthine universe. When most people think of vampires, they think of blood, night and stalking prey. But sometimes vampires just want to relax and play a game of poker. “

Bethina will be next on Smashwords, as soon as I get a chance to do some editing, and I should be posting the rough draft of Herrick soon.

Ties of Blood is now available in paper back!

The third installment of the Amaranthine series is now available in paper back.

Right now you can get it from the very cool CS estore –  https://www.createspace.com/3661748 – Amazon is coming next.

I’ve had a few people ask me about Barnes & Noble, and I have to admit I’m a little frustrated when it comes to B&N. I have been happily letting Smashwords handle my distribution to several places (Kobo, Barnes & Noble, etc) and they’ve always been prompt, but so far nothing. I inquired about why the book still has not shipped – one month after publishing – and was told that it will ship this week or next, which means another two weeks after that before it will show up at Barnes and Noble! I’m not very happy about that. Best case scenario is two more weeks, making it six weeks since I published – meanwhile my dashboard says it shipped to Apple on the 17th of September. If it can ship to apple why can’t it ship anywhere else?

This is the first time I’ve had trouble with Smashwords distribution, but if it doesn’t ship soon I’m going to go through Barnes & Noble myself. :(

Okay, enough of the bad stuff! Go check out the estore – even if you’re not buying a paperback – because I am rather proud of the wallpaper (yes, I get custom wallpaper!) And while you’re at it, why not go check out the other two? They have cool wallpaper, too!

9-10-11 Ties of Blood is officially available on e-book!

Despite my being sick and out most of the week, Ties of Blood, book 3 in the Amaranthine series, is now officially available on Smashwords – just barely squeaking in at the last minute!

Don’t want to read it on the PC? No problem! Smashwords sells copies for Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo, and most e-reading apps including Stanza, Aldiko, Adobe Digital Editions, and others! Just download the appropriate version.

Wanna wait? no problem! Go here to read sample chapters and more!

The paperback will be following along – I have to wait for the proof to arrive (yes, again) so I can double check it before I approve it. Look for it in roughly four weeks.

Instead of putting the book description in here, I thought I’d take a moment to thank some people instead!

My husband, who is just as twisted as I am and maybe more so. I love you.

My mother, who knows the books better than I do and continues to re-read every time I re-write.

My brother, who happens to be one of my favorite people in the world. Also, to my father  – hey, vampire books are way more fun than politics! . And, of course my “UK representative” Rick and his miniature zoo.

Carolyn “Mighty Ed” Cason for once again stepping up and attempting to smack this manuscript into shape.

Jonathan Harvey for all of his bazillion distractions. If you want to waste time he’ll find you a million ways to do it. He also has a book (though there are no vampires in it).

My beta readers extraordinaire: Sharon, Julie, Steve, Super Schnurpel and Kathy.  Good beta readers are hard to find and you guys are worth a million!

Paul V. Montesino, PhD, fellow author and all around standup guy for his Spanish translation. He saved Jorge from being a victim of online translators!

Ruth Anne Nordin, fellow writer and friend for her encouragement to me and so many others.

Daniel Kennedy who pops up now and again, and who is to blame for this whole series.

Susan “The Ever Delightful” Koenig way up there in Canada for her great suggestions and the smiles she brings.

The awesome gals at Indie Authors Unite, even though I have been absent lately.

And to everyone else who’s encouraged me over the last year. You have no idea how much a kind word can mean!

Lastly, a special thank you to God. Who says he doesn’t love a good vampire book?

*whew*  Look for website updates sometime this week, too, and maybe even a newsletter! *gasp*

Poll: Legacy of Ghosts Director’s Cut

Last year as part of my promotion for Legacy of Ghosts I posted six “Lost Chapters” or “Deleted Scenes”. These weren’t really deleted scenes, but rather snips I wrote later for the purpose of promotion. Though there is no “necessary” information in them, they are amusing after a fashion, and someone asked me if I was planning to release a “Director’s Cut” of the book with those six scenes “put back in”.

If I did this, I think what i would do is create a webpage with a question that only someone who had read the book would know the answer to, and a correct answer would give you a download code to get a free copy of the Director’s Cut because there’s no point in someone who has already purchased the book having to buy another version just for kicks.  I couldn’t price it as a flat out free because I know if I were looking to buy a book and saw the original version for 2$ or the expanded version for free I’d pick the freebie version – more for less and all that.

But, the question is, is it worth the effort of plugging them in, uploading it to Smashwords (only) and having hubby make the question webpage?
