Ten Day Book Challenge: Day Six

I’ve been tagged by the spook-tacular Rami Ungar to do the ten day book challenge – Blog Style!

The rules:

  • Thank whoever nominated you with big, bold print. If they have a blog, link to the post where you got tagged there.
  • Explain the rules.
  • Post the cover of a book that was influential on you or that you love dearly.
  • Explain why
  • Tag someone else to do the challenge, and let them know they’ve been tagged.

If you know me at all, you knew this one was coming.

Though most people know VC Andrews for her incest laden Flowers in the Attic, I think this is her best work. Period. The beautiful contrast is what influenced me here, her ability to make things creepy that should be fun and innocent, such as the shelf of stuffed animals in the first Audrina’s bedroom, the way the second Audrina has to rock in that rocking chair, singing the child’s song, trying to “fill up” her head with the first Audrina’s memories (an Audrina that is just “bones in her grave”)… Damn. The woman could set a scene, and that juxtaposition of what should be pure and beautiful, but wasn’t, and the way, as Audrina ages, that she begins to see things for what they are – all the splendor it turns out is really faded, shabby, not as sparkling or clean or revered as she thought – holds a sort of symbolism as she also becomes disenchanted with things… I could go on and on, but you get the general gist of it. Technically, I first noticed Andrews ability to do this in Flowers in the Attic, but of the two books I like this one better – it’s got more twists and turns in it, so it gets to be the winner.
