#IABE in Des Moines!

Last weekend I attended the Indie Author Book Expo in Des Moines. Though foot traffic at the Valley West Mall was lighter than usual, thanks in part to the crazy heat and the art festival, we still had a great time! I got to meet many new to me authors and of course saw some from last year. Looking forward to the next one!

We got to Des Moines Friday and checked in. The motel we got this year was really cute. Even Booy approved:

We had dinner at Zombie Burger and tried to watch our ritual Forensic Files (when ever hubby and I stay in a motel we watch Forensic Files) only, we were too early! It wasn’t on yet! *gasp* And then when it did come on the cable went out! Well, a chunk of it did, including that channel, so we ended up watching Live PD and then called it a night.

Since we went to bed so early we got to the mall EARLY! Yes, WE were early for something. It shows what a crazy weekend it was! We got set up pretty fast:

As I said, we had lighter foot traffic than usual, especially on Saturday, so I had a chance to scoot around and visit other tables. There were a lot of amazing authors there who you should check out!

We also had a surprise visitor:

33

Day two went about the same as the first day, though some of our authors were one day only, so we had a smaller crowd, but it was no less fun. Booy was sad to have to check out of the motel, but he did at least help pack:

35.jpg

A friend of mine came to visit (though for some reason we took no photos of him!) and I pawned a book off on him, so that was a win-win. We actually stayed a little after five, but then packed up so we could make it home in time for Villisca’s amazing fireworks display! And though it has nothing to do with the expo, it seems like a fitting end to a great weekend!

Have a great week everyone and if you’re interested in an autographed paperback hit me up in email (joleene@joleenenaylor.com) or facebook messenger!

February 2012 Newsletter

If you are subscribed to the newsletter and did not get a copy in your inbox let me know – we’re trying a new system 🙂

Hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve done a newsletter, but the husband has made me a handy dandy form that should make the process go much faster than it used to (aka no more hand coding! yay!), so let’s give it a whirl.

I’m going to be MIA for two weeks, starting the 6th and ending the 22nd. I may make it out to a few blogs, depending on time, but I won’t be taking on any new book covers during that time.

That said, there’s a new feature on my Amaranthine Night blog; Character interviews with my own characters – and YOU get to ask the questions! Verchiel has already been interviewed, and next up is Jorick. Stop by the blog and leave your questions for him and I’ll try to make him answer them. Check this post for the full schedule.

Now for the obligatory “blah, blah, go buy my books, blah, blah…”
You may remember the old 101 Tips for traveling with a Vampire booklet? Well, after two years, I’ve revamped it by adding a new, shorter intro, changing the sneak peek to several pages from the upcoming book 4, and also crediting Jonathan Harvey as co-author. For more details check out my blog post.

Speaking of book 4, I am still hoping for a spring release. I am sending it off to two beta readers while I’m gone, and the third when they get back to me. I am also hoping to release book 5 at the end of the year, so I had best get cracking on that soon!

Be sure to check out the seven short Vampire Morsels; Adam, Alexander, Arowenia, Ashton, Benjamin, Bethina and Claudius and look for Elsa later this month. They are available on Barnes & Noble, Kobo & Smashwords for FREE.
And if you’re in the market for a book cover, or book cover art, you might want to check outCoverart.JoleeneNaylor.com and see what I have to offer.
Now, let’s get on to the

Random Fun

The Interesting link: Free Art Lessons
designed for parents and children, anyone can use this site to learn the basics of several mediums, including pastels, watercolors and pen and ink. With easy to follow directions, anyone can be drawing in a matter of minutes!

The Read of the month: Two billion reasons to Kill???
(from smashwords)A Chicago area tycoon, T. Jackson Bender, is brutally murdered at his home in Winnetka on the Fourth of July. The motive seems obvious. After all, the man was worth billions. The big question is: who stands to profit the most from his sudden demise? Burton James, along with his longtime buddy Patrick Murphy of the Chicago Police Department, set out to solve the crime. The pair will take you on a journey with more twists and turns than a cornfield maze in the month of October. But don’t assume the obvious…you do know what assume spells, don’t you??? – even better, it’s FREE

The Video of the month: Jeffery Dallas – Akbar
A bizarre song about a kid who goes into the cornfield and makes a new friend… Strange but worth a watch.

Have a great February and hopefully I’ll see you all again in March!

April Newsletter

OMG! A newsletter! No, this is not an April Fool’s joke, though I guess since I’ve been so lazy with these it might seem like it, huh?
But, since this is late (due to a series of unfortunate events that are nowhere near as fun as Lemony Snicket’s), I’ve missed the first completely. Just as well, I can never think of a joke, anyway.

The last newsletter I did was in January, and since then I’ve finished the rough draft of book 3 Ties of Blood. It’s with the editor and the beta readers, so nothing to do now but wait patiently. I am hoping to get this one out before October, as I’d like to take the month of October off this year and just kind of relax for a change. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

There’s been a lot of cool stuff happening all over the place, and I am going to be bad and not link to any of it. I know. Horrible, isn’t it?

Oh, all right. Indie Authors Unite has moved to a brand new website that is much better. Valerie Maarten and Samantha Fury have worked their fingers off on it, so you should stop by and take a look!

You might remember that I mentioned a book by my friend Jonathan Harvey, aka Jissilly. He has slaved long and hard over Shades of Plaid: A Very Unconventional Weekly Journey Into Christian Living and it is now available! You can get it on Smashwords, Amazon Kindle or in Paper Back.

I have managed to get two (oh wow, tow!) of the Vampire Morsels up on Smashwords as free reads. Check out Adam and Alexander and feel free to leave a review *cough*

The Author Samples on my blog were a lot of fun, so I have decided to extend them. If you would like to have a book featured, or know someone who would, send me the info (the details are here and I’ll post it. This author business is plenty hard, so the more we can do to help one another, the better! Check out the Author Samples!

Something else I am toying with is Character Interviews. Say what? That’s right, interviews of characters. Being the ever gracious vampire (read: he was threatened with glitter)Jorick has volunteered to go first. In the mean time, if you’re a writer and have a story or book character that you’d like to have interviewed then go here for the questions and details.

All this talk about the third book makes me feel like I should mention the second book. Yes, if you missed it, Legacy of Ghosts, the second installment in the Amaranthine series, is available for purchase! You can pick up your digital copy at Smashwords or Amazon Kindle, or grab a paper back. If you’re interested in an autographed copy then drop me a line at Joleene@JoleeneNaylor.com.

Legacy of Ghosts cover - fixed

After the events of Shades of Gray, Katelina seeks peace with Jorick, but it’s hard to come by in a world shrouded in secrets and threatened by a brewing storm. Though Kateesha plans to fight the same battle as Jorick’s fledgling, a common enemy isn’t enough to overcome past betrayals, and the tempest explodes into a violent frenzy. Drawn into a deathly conflict, Jorick and Katelina must learn to overcome old regrets, or risk losing their future to the ghosts of their past.

Legacy of Ghosts, the second installment of the Amaranthine series, plunges back into a world of blood and cruelty where the darkness hold dominion and vampires don’t sparkle.

You can read sample chapters at https://joleenenaylor.wordpress.com/ in either whole chapter format or in tiny, blog sized nuggets. Yeah, I’m all about choice.

And why should DVD’s have all the fun? Check out “The Lost Chapters” – aka the “deleted” scenes from Legacy of Ghosts. Stop by and enjoy a snippet of pointless vampire fun!

Now, let’s get on to the

Website Updates

I have finally managed to updated the Cover Art Frequently Asked Questions in an effort to better serve authors seeking book cover art. I have also updated my website at www.JoleeneNaylor.com.

Check the Links Page for several new links to writers blogs and/or websites. There are some great authors to discover!

Last month I added two humorous flash fiction stories to the Flash Fiction section. The Party piggybacks from a Jonathan Harvey story and tells what really happened, while Supplier Shortage gives you an inside look at how vampires really lure their victims.

Last month I also added two poems to the Poetry section. Ward 16 and The Modern Farm, and this month I have added Rift of Silence.

The Book Cover Gallery saw the addition of thirty-five new covers including a YA Fantasy, some assorted Horror, a couple of humor, poetry, inspirational and some sci-fi.

Between last month and this month I’ve also added 18 new photos. Here’s a sneak peek at a couple of them:

Janurary 2011 Newsletter

Happy 2011! You may have noticed there was no December Newsletter, so this one is going to pull double duty, I’m afraid. Aren’t you excited?

December was a good month on a lot of levels. In the Amaranthine world, I have joined with a group of fellow authors at Indie Authors Unite. Links will be forthcoming when things are finalized. Also, participating in a Holiday sale and doing a Promotional two-day book giveaway shot Shades of Gray sales to the highest they have ever been (not counting the free downloads on smashwords!). I owe a lot of that credit to my fellow authors who have all been chipping in and helping to promote one another.

Another cool thing in December was my author interview at Sinister Echoes. Alannah asked some great questions and we had a lot of fun. If you missed it, check it out.

So what does January have in store? I will be working on the third installment of the series Ties of Blood, as well as a short story project. because of this, I am going to be very slow where book covers are concerned, and in fact I may have to turn some down. I hate the idea of doing that, but I really need to take a month and focus on my writing. I may change my inbox to send a form mail saying something to this effect.

Also, january may well bring about the first book of my friend Jonathan Harvey, aka Jissilly. He has slaved long and hard over Shades of Plaid: A Very Unconventional Weekly Journey Into Christian Living. More details when I have them!

Another exciting thing is the new Daily Samples I will be hosting on my blog. This will be samples from other authors, so that you can get to know their work, too, and maybe find something you like. The first one is already been posted, and if you’re interested in sending me a sample, then please see my blog post with all the instructions.

In return, samples of Shades of Gray have been posted on other author’s blogs. So far it has been featured by Ashlynn Monroe, Linda Prather, and Valerie Maarten. Each one has a different excerpt, so be sure to stop by them all!

Random Fun

The Interesting link: Don’t Click It Why? because there is nothing to click on this site. An experiment by the institute of interactive research, the interface is designed to give the user several example scenarios and determine whether they miss – or don’t miss – the click. Think your smart phone touch screen, only with a mouse and no tapping. The Explore section is especially cool. See if you can not click for your whole visit.

The Lots-O-Fun link: Free Rice So there’s a good chance that your playing does not feed the hungry, however, the game is addictive anyway. What is it? Basically it’s multiple choice vocabulary questions that go something like:”Basic means” 1-happy 2-friendly 3-flat 4- no frills. sound easy? Oh, it is – then they throw out words like verisimilitude. I made it to level 39 of 60. No good at English? there is also Art, Math, Chemistry, Geometry and Language learning to choose from. A fun time killer!

The Read of the month: Halloween’s Perfect Storm by LC Cooper Halloween is never out of season, especially with this amusing short story about a surprise Halloween haunting. A free read.

The Music of the month: It Doesn’t feel Like Christmas by Toad the Wet SprocketOkay, so it’s one song, and okay, Christmas is over, but come on! It’s free Toad, people! Toad! who doesn’t love them some Toad? Huh? Huh? No sign ups or user names, just click the download button, enter your email address and follow the link they send you.

The Video of the month: Cruel, Cruel Moon song by Paul & Storm, video by Mike Spiff Booth. Sent to me by Jonathan – aka Jissilly – this is a fun, lighthearted and funny song about a big, shiny moon that transforms the singer’s significant into a werewolf so that he fears she may kill him. Fun for the whole family!

(if you have suggestions for the links of the month please email them to me at joleene@joleenenaylor.com – you will be credited by whatever name you choose.)

I added two flash fiction stories to the Flash Fiction section. The Junior Warlock of Mapleleaf Drive pits a teenage warlock against his neighbor’s evil dog, meanwhile in Attic Treasure Alex finds an old purple quill in the family attic, but harmless fun turns tragic when he and his sister try to use it.

I also added two poems to the Poetry section. Raven Darkness and Something Golden.

The Book Cover Gallery saw the addition of twenty-four new covers including some thrillers, romance, historical, and even sci-fi.

I’ve also added 16 new photos. Here’s a sneak peek at a couple of them:

The Interesting link: How Much is Inside? An old favorite of mine; How much is Inside asks the tough questions, like, how many cups of beer are in a keg? Can you really cover a car with one roll of aluminum foil? How many feet of Ramen are in a cup of Ramen noodles? Are there really 360 threads per inch in 360 thread count cotton pillow cases? or How large a puddle of blood would be created if a person bled to death in a parking lot? Among others. so, if you want to know how much is inside, then give this site a visit.

The Lots-O-Fun link: I will draw You As A Stick Man Amazing site that draws you as a stick man! Upload the picture of your choice and then wait a few moments while the masterpiece is created. You can share the image with friends, and also view a celebrity stick man gallery. (If you feel unfulfilled by this, then check out http://www.optuswhalesong.com.au/ where you can compose a song of whale noises using your keyboard. A fun time waster!)

The Read of the month: Songs of the Dead by Dawn Colclasure Songs of the Dead is a re-release of the chapbook originally published in 2003 and, with more than twenty-seven new poems, it has more than earned the title “expanded”. From poems of death and surrender, to fury and revenge, this is a poetry book to enjoy in the darkest of moods and one that anyone who’s ever “been there” will instantly empathize with.

The Music of the month: Noise Trade.com A website devoted to connecting listeners to new talent, Noise Trade offers music for free with the option to “tip” the artists. You can also enter your email address to get a free 25 song sampler in a zip file. They’ll send you an email with a download code, but when I went back the code was automatically entered.

The Video of the month: The Ornithologist Song by Jonathan Harvey. This song gets stuck in my head every time I thin of it, so it’s time I shared. A cute song about… well, ornithologists and ducks with an intro that gives a miniature lesson on how to “speak southern”.

After what has been a long, hot summer, autumn is finally here, and it’s brought some fun with it.

The winners of the Sharonlee Poetry Contest have been announced at the CPC! All the Judge’s choice winners will be receiving an autographed copy of Shades of Gray. A special congratulations goes out to all the participants for creating such wonderful poetry!

I found my blurb for the Legacy of Ghosts book cover and got it finished! Yay me!

Legacy of Ghosts cover 6 x 9 rough

If you’re curious, I went with “Sometimes the shadows of the past can darken the future.” It was a combination of ideas from myself, hubby and the internet. This just proves more heads are better than one.

And in case you have no idea what I’m talking about, I’ll be happy to tell you!

After the events of Shades of Gray, Katelina seeks rest and recovery at Jorick’s house by the sea. But peace is something that seems impossible to find, so long as she’s determined to stay with a vampire – and she is determined. Or is she?

Despite her growing attraction to her vampire “hero”, there are so many things she doesn’t know about him; so many secrets left hidden in the shadows. While Katelina struggles to unravel the mystery of a locked room and a faded photograph, a storm brews in the world beyond. Kateesha, a former ally, builds a secret war coven to fight the same battle as Jorick’s fledgling. But, a common enemy isn’t enough to overcome past betrayals, and the tempest explodes into a violent frenzy that may leave one of them dead, if not changed forever.

Old enemies will resurface and the past will come back to haunt both Jorick and Katelina as they’re pulled by opposing forces into a battle that neither had anticipated. Can they band together and stand strong against the waves that threaten to tear them apart, or will they loose themselves to old regrets and older guilt? And even if they can survive, is there any way to lay the memory of past mistakes to rest, or will they both be haunted by their ghosts forever?

Coming in October 2010, Legacy of Ghosts, the second installment of the Amaranthine series, plunges back into a world of blood and cruelty where the darkness hold dominion and vampires don’t sparkle.

Speaking of my husband, he is hard at work coding the new website, which will hopefully be unveiled in time for the new book. It’s a much cleaner, tidier version, and I like it better, so cross your fingers!

If you haven’t visited my new Author’s blog yet, then please stop by to enjoy sneak peeks, random vampire fun and the occasional word on self publishing. You can find it at https://joleenenaylor.wordpress.com/.

Now for the obligatory “blah, blah, go buy my books, blah, blah…”

101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire is available through Amazon Kindle for $.99 or Smashwords where you can set your own price and pay only what it’s worth to you!

Of course, if you’ve missed Shades of Gray, you can still get it through Amazon/CreateSpace for $11.00 , Amazon Kindle for $1.50 and Smashwords where you can set your own price!.

Feel like you’re missing out because you’re only on Facebook? Why not become a fan of the very cool Shades of Gray Fan Page Since Facebook has changed the way the pages work (of course) I am thinking about making an author page in the near future, so more details on that when/if it happens.

The Lots-O-Fun link: Cartoon Doll Emporium This might be a little girly, but it;s still a lot of fun. Hundreds of flash “paper doll” applications where you can dress and accessorize, and then save. Why? I don’t know. It’s just fun, people!

The Read of the month: My Lord Hades by Stephannie Beman (from smashwords) In a world where Gods rule and Daemons are feared, Hades, the most notorious Phlegethon daemon-god to roam the ancient world, is released from his prison in Tartarus by the Olympian Zeus to aid in the war against the Titians, and then he meets Persephone, daughter of the earth goddess Demeter, and may just lose his heart.

The Music of the month: Thousand Houses An indy band from Omaha, nebraska, led by the former front man of the now defunct Blue Moon ghetto, which had success back in the 90’s and whose CD’s sell for sixty plus dollars on Amazon (seriously!). The best part about the new band isn’t that they sound a lot like Blue Moon Ghetto, or even that they’re music is great, but that you can get their first album, Inside the Wires, as a free digital download just by singing up for the newsletter. Awesome, huh?

The Video of the month: Funny Lego Spoof of Harry Potter by Adam Carlson. The name says it all. “Hermie-own, Hermie-own, Hermie-own.” yeah, those weird, zombie like voices were stuck in my head all day! And though I love professor Snape, and bearded Draco, the Weasley Twins still win in my book 😉

August Newsletter

(I’m going to experiment with posting my monthly “Ramblings from the Darkness” newsletter here. I may or may not do it again. If you’d like to get this newsletter sent to your inbox every month for free, please sign up at http://www.JoleeneNaylor.com )

First, I want to thank every one who voted for me in The New Covey Awards last month. No, we didn’t win, but thanks to some discussion in the New Covey group, I’ve been invited to be a judge instead! I think that’s better, so, yay!

Anyway, “Happy August!” I say that because I can’t think of any holidays worth mentioning. But, that doesn’t mean August is uneventful, by any means! For one thing, the CPC is hosting their third annual poetry profile art contest, this year using the art of Sharronlee. If you’re not familiar with this, I’ll take a moment to explain. Contestants choose from six poetry categories, then craft up to two poems inspired by the art in Sharonlee’s “Art” folder. And, this year’s Judge Award prizes are autographed copies of Shades of Gray. All the rules, details and link are available on the CPC backup blog, so go check it out!

I actually got a lot accomplished last month, which is pretty rare, I know. First of all, Legacy of Ghosts has had my last round of edits and is back with The Mighty Ed for a last look over. What’s Legacy of Ghosts? If you’ve managed to miss it, I’ll be happy to tell you!

I thought the last line was kind of catchy. I admit, with Shades of Gray I didn’t try to emphasize the differences between Amaranthine and Twilight, but I’ve found that Twilight devotees aren’t fond of it because it’s much more “adult”, so I’ve decided I might as well make it clear.

The book cover is actually done except for the “blurb”. If I can’t find one by the end of the month, I’ll put up a poll about it and let people vote.

(for fun preview)
preview

Aside from that, I also got the website redesign done (note, the designing, not the programming. The latter falls to hubby to do). here’s a sneak peek at what it will look like:

preview

You might recognize the banner from my new Author blog on wordpress. If you haven’t seen it yet, then you should check it out at https://joleenenaylor.wordpress.com/. I plan to use this blog to post only Amaranthine, vampire or self publishing related items instead of the wonderful randomness I have at Myspace. I’ve actually contemplated an author blog for a while because I’m pretty sure that my Myspace readers get tired of listening to book related things. However, I still intend to cross-post some things. I’m also going to add a list of Amaranthine blog posts to the newsletter every month. Oh boy, huh?

Now for the obligatory “blah, blah, go buy my books, blah, blah…”

101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire is available through Amazon Kindle for $.99 or Smashwords where you can set your own price and pay only what it’s worth to you!

Random Fun

The Interesting link: Mike Naylor’s ACII Art. No, this guy isn’t related to me, but ASCII art is something you don’t see as much anymore, so I enjoyed browsing through this website. He has galleries divided up into categories, and he’s really good at what he does! Go take a look and see what I mean.

The Lots-O-Fun link: Xtranormal.com If you can type, you can make movies, or so the folks at XtraNormal say, and they’re right! Choose the backdrop, choose your characters, and type the script into the input field, save and you have a movie! Some of the site is free (some characters or backgrounds require “points” in order to save your movie, and points cost money), but if you’re not too picky you can produce some fun, free movies. I spent about half an hour making one to test it: http://www.xtranormal.com/profile/2809739/

The Read of the month: Out and About: Photos by Kerri Anne Messner a full color coffee table book of beautiful photographs taken by Kerri Ann Messner and available in hardcover or softcover (softcover is cheaper). Well put together, this book features some of my favorite photos by the rising photographer and is defiantly worth a look-see! And, while you’re there, you can even vote for this book *hint*hint*.

The Music of the month: Kevin MacLeod: Royalty Free Music Kevin MacLeod releases music under the Creative Common Attribution license, which means all of his music is free to use, for anything commercial or non commercial, so long as you credit him somewhere (whether in the credits or video details). Broken up into genres and even sortable by “feel”, there is a lot of fantastic stuff here! You may just see one of them turn up in my next book trailer!

The Video of the month: If Cartoons Were Real It was this or some weirdos dancing around Bolivar, Missouri’s Wal-Mart (yeah, that is a real video), but this has cool special effects so it won. Okay, they aren’t super special, but they’re there. Either way, this video poses the question, “How bad would cartoons suck if they were real?”. Pokémon is my favorite.
