Brothers of Darkness Cover Reveal

PATRICK - vs 3
We knew it was going to be Patrick on the cover – does he look like you expected? I did change the layout a little so it’s not exactly like the series because while it goes with it, it’s also a separate animal, and with other stand alone books coming (Micah’s, maybe Jorick’s, and a new trilogy set in the future) all NOT staring Katelina (but in the same Universe) I guess it’s a good idea to start building on the idea of in-Universe novels that are not in the series proper.

What do you think? Like it? Love it? Hate it? Want an autographed paperback copy? If so message me, otherwise leave your thoughts in the comments!

(It may take a few days for all retailers to update the listing with the new cover, so if you don’t see it yet, it’s coming!)

PATRICK - vs 3

The new Collector’s cover will appear in December, so you have until then to grab the old collector version .

This is the final cover in the grand re-branding, so we’re all done with the reveals! What’s next? As I mentioned, I’m going to start writing a Micah and Loren story (I don’t have a release date set, we’ll see how it goes), and a website redesign may be in the works.

In the meantime, I’m going to be in Des Moines at the Indie Author Expo at the end of this month. You can check out the sidebar “coming events” for more details, or wait for the blog post. Be great to see some of my fans there!

Brothers of Darkness goes Live TOMORROW!

That’s right, my little Amaranthinites, Patrick’s story is available tomorrow as an ebook at all retailers, and as a paperback. (The Collector’s Edition will be available in paperback November 1st.)

Also tomorrow, I will be the host of the Blood Moon Rising event all day, so if you feel so moved to spread the word about Brothers of Darkness, that would be awesome! Below is the synopsis, links, and some cool graphics.

patrick-high-res

“Not a love story…a dark spiral into blackness.”

“If you’ve read Shades of Gray, you know how this has to end.”

The prequel to Shades of Gray tells the story of Patrick and Michael, how they got tangled into Claudius’ web, and their valiant fight to escape.

When Patrick’s missing brother Michael returns, he brings with him a world of darkness. Turned into a vampire against his will, Michael is the coven’s whipping boy. When Patrick tries to help, he’s claimed as a slave who spends his weekends preparing victims, scooping ashes, and falling prey to the vampire’s twisted desires.

There’s only so much hell he can take, and when vampires from a warring coven offer sanctuary in exchange for cooperation, Patrick quickly agrees. What he expected to be a few months drags out into a long smear of nightmares, and though he fights for hope and freedom, the cost of victory may be more than he bargained for.

And here’s some excerpts:

Excerpt #1:

The park was eerie in the dark. The hulking jungle gym sat like a crouched monster waiting to spring, and the swing set’s long shadows were tendrils of evil that snaked toward Patrick and Michael as they leaned on the teeter-totter.

The snow slowed, then stopped. Patrick scuffled his feet in the drifts and counted off the seconds. How long would it take a vampire to find them?

And why in the hell do we want him to?

Michael’s shoulders went stiff and Patrick followed his gaze. At first, he saw only darkness, then, like last time, the guy materialized from the shadows.

“You’re looking for me?”

Michael narrowed his eyes. “You’re the mind reader, you tell me.”

Without hesitation, the vampire asked sharply, “Why should I help you?”

Michael grabbed his brother’s arm. “Come on, Pat. I told you this was a fuckin’ waste of time.”

Before they could move, the mysterious man replied, “I didn’t say I wouldn’t help, only asked why I should.”

Patrick nodded hopefully. If the vampires were half as terrifying as this guy, there was no way they could deal with them alone. They needed someone who could help them and, though he couldn’t say why, he was sure this was the guy for the job. Maybe because he scares the shit outta me. “Hang on, Mikey. Let’s give him a chance.”

Michael glared at the vampire. “Why? We don’t even know who he is!”

The man all but rolled his eyes. “My name is Jorick. What do you want from me?”

Patrick answered quickly, “He needs help to get away from Claudius.”

Jorick studied them. The moments stretched thin and taut, heavy with the oppressive winter atmosphere. Finally, he said, “Let me speak to my associate. We might be able to do something. Return here in five days.”

Then he disappeared.

Excerpt #2:

For once Claudius wasn’t having a party, just an informal gathering of ‘the favorites’ in a room that looked like a parlor—If Windsor Castle had a parlor. Gilt framed paintings and expensive knick-knacks littered every available space. Rather than a victim in a punch bowl, Claudius made them pour bags of blood into crystal serving pitchers and stand at the ready, filling glasses as requested. The bags were the thick plastic kind, like the hospital used, but Patrick knew better than to ask where they came from.

Amanda stood behind one ornate sofa and Patrick stood behind the other, wearing the musty uniform. A sexy vampiress lounged in a chair across from him. Against his will, his eyes were drawn to her again and again. A dark haired male hovered near her. Though she tolerated him, she seemed to enjoy watching his eyes flame brighter and brighter as she flirted with the other vampires.

Not my business.

Then he called her Yulia.

With that name came nightmare memories of the basement, of the whip, of the darkness. He’d imagined her face a hundred times, but it never looked like that; full red lips, heavy eyelids, and foreign cheekbones framed by long glossy black hair. She dripped jewels and grace, as did the others, and suddenly Patrick understood Claudius’ ranking system. There were two tiers of favorites; those like Troy who were dumb muscle, and those who gained favor with their beauty and refinement, as if surrounding himself by elegant vampires could make Claudius elegant by default.

A dark complexioned vampire strode into the room. With his rugged features and long wild hair, he looked like a Native American. The scar on his cheek and the curt sharp way he moved showed which of the two groups he belonged to.

He bowed stiffly before Claudius. “Master, there is a messenger for you.”

Claudius sipped blood from his goblet, his expression bored. “Who is it, Joseff, and what do they want?”

“They’re from The Guild and they will only reveal the message to you.”

Claudius motioned Joseff aside. “Very well. I’ll deal with them.” He swept to his feet and toward the door. Joseff started to follow, but Claudius waved him back. “I can handle this myself.”

Joseff stepped back among the beautiful ones and shifted from one foot to the other. Yulia caught his eye and smiled. He grunted and looked away, but soon his gaze drifted back. She smiled and played with her low cut bodice, tracing her bright silver fingernail over the fleshy bubble of her cleavage.

The conversation tinkled around them. The pitcher and tray were heavy and Patrick’s arms sagged. He distracted himself with the unfolding drama. Joseff eyed Yulia and the jealous dark-haired vampire eyed Joseff. Patrick wondered how long until it came to blows.

“You!”

Patrick spun to find an angry vampire standing next to him, glass extended.

“I shouldn’t have to tell you twice.”

Patrick hefted the glass pitcher with one hand, the tray balanced in the other, and poured out the blood in a thin stream. Patrick’s muscles spasmed. His arm shook. The stream buckled and slopped over the edge of the goblet onto the vampire’s shiny black shoes.

“You idiot!”

He slapped Patrick hard enough to knock him backwards. The tray flew out of his hand and the contents of the pitcher sailed through the air in a spiral of crimson. It splattered on the floor and splashed the nearest vampires.

They leapt up as one. The reaction was mixed. Part of them licked the ruby spots from themselves, their eyes gleaming, and the others screeched about their ruined clothing.

Patrick righted himself in time for the vampire with the shiny shoes to grab him by the scruff of his neck. “You made the mess!” he screamed. “Lick it off!”

Before Patrick could comprehend the words, the vampire forced him to his knees and shoved his face against his shoes. The smell of leather and polish mixed with the scent of blood, and he choked.

Patrick Poll!

The Patrick prequel is in the editing stages, with an October release date – but it needs a name, and for that I need your help!

Which is your favorite title? Which one would make you grab the book? I want to know! (If you don’t know what it’s about, you can read the in-progress synopsis below the poll)

(In progress synopsis)

Patrick is a twenty-something scrounger who’s decided to grow up – sort of. With a job and his first apartment, he’s plagued by problems; the love of his life is with another guy and his brother Michael is missing.

Then Michael comes back and the real trouble starts.

Turned into a vampire against his will, Michael is kept as a whipping boy by the coven. When he begs for help, Patrick reluctantly investigates their creepy mansion. Captured, he’s claimed as a slave who straddles two worlds; one of light and one of dark.

To escape servitude, the brothers turn to Jorick, a mysterious vampire who promises sanctuary if they help destroy the coven. Though he’s only a human, Patrick does his best, even as he spirals into a black abyss of alcohol, drugs, and murder. Desperate for absolution, he seeks redemption in the arms of his first love, only to discover that what he thought was an angel is just another lie. When his daytime and nighttime worlds collide in a scene of brutal violence, and he realizes he must forsake the light until he is free of the vampires.

Then he meets Katelina. Though he knows he shouldn’t, he’s soon falling in love and ready to step up his fight to leave the darkness behind and be with her. But, all victories come with a price, and the cost of this one could be his very life.

The dark emotional prequel to Shades of Gray plunges into a black abyss of anger, misery, and despair without the promise of a happy ending.  As with all prequels, Patrick is a spoiler-filled look at what came before and just may be the blackest of all the Amaranthine tales.

Which title is your favorite? What do you think of the blurb?

#FirstLineFriday (Patrick)

I got this from Rami Ungar, who got the idea from a facebook group. On Friday you post the first one or two lines from one of your stories, novels, works in progress or potential stories with the tag #FirstLineFriday (with hashtag). He thought it would be fun to see the idea move into blogs (and start a trend), and I agree.

These two lines come from Patrick, a prequel I had shelved but am planning to go through in July (It needs a timeline revision, so that will be a bit of work). Mixed reviews from betas made me abandon the project, but I have decided (partially due to advice from awesome people like fellow author Maegan Provan – check out her blog post encouraging authors to “be themselves” in their writing) that though not everyone will like it, it is a story worth sharing because *I* like it.

“Okay , Mom. Yeah, yeah, I promise.” Patrick glanced at the clock. It was almost nine, and he was late.

I moved out to get away from this.

Maybe not the catchiest opening, but that’s what you get from unfinished/unedited.

Want to participate in #FirstLineFriday? Just post a blog with that it the title and share your sentences!

Patrick: Synopsis Revisited

I ran the long version the other day but since everyone felt it was too long, here is a much shorter version:

Before Katelina found love in the arms of her vampire Jorick, there was another man.

Patrick’s brother Michael disappears and returns as a vampire. Turned against his will, he begs Patrick to kill his tormentors. When Patrick tries, he is claimed as a slave and forced from one unspeakable act to another.

Then he meets Katelina and falls in love. To be with her, he has to win his freedom, but all victories come with a price, and the cost of this one could be his very life.

The dark, emotional prequel to Shades of Gray plunges into a black abyss of anger and despair without the promise of a happy ending.  Patrick is a spoiler-filled look at what came before and just may be the blackest of the Amaranthine tales.

Better? Worse?
