The Proof is Here

Last night I posted a blog elsewhere and expressed concern about my missing proof for Legacy of Ghosts. The gods of the mail service must have read it, because the proof arrived today!

The snazy front cover!

I’d like to point out that there is no pink involved this time – only a bit of purple. But purple is cool. And so what if it ends up colored a little girly? I am a girl, after all. And besides, this book has a lot more romance than the last one did. Yes, there’s still killing and blood, but the focus of the first one was setting up their situation, and the main focus in this one is setting their relationship up and dusting all the little road blocks out of the way so we can move on in the next book. so, yes, there is less fighting and killing in this book, but they couldn’t and more “emotional” drama, but they can’t “grow” any if they have to spend every second running for their lives. I mean, how can you establish a relationship that way?

Anyway, here’s the back:

There should be a gray box around the quotes.... but as you can see it is invisible

So yeah, I need to darken up the box on the back cover a bit, and as for the text, well….

"here's a typo, there's a semi colon, everywhere's some rephrasing..."

Yep. I’m on page 76 and I’ve already found a few typos, inverted quotes and changed some wording.  When I was first doing writing/publishing research so many blogs and sites commented that a manuscript “read” differently on paper vs on the computer screen, and they’re right! I know it must be psychological, but it’s there just the same.

Okay, silly as it is, wanted to share that with the world 🙂

Vote in the August New Covey Cover Awards

Stolen from The New Covey Awards

Yeah, I said August. Okay, so things are a little behind, but hey, it’s the voting that counts here. So, take a moment and pop over to the New Covey Awards and place a vote for the most eye catching cover.

The covers are posted in “blog posts” in the center of the page, and the flash voting poll is on the left hand side. No, I don’t have any covers in it this month, but there are some really lovely ones worth checking out.

So, go and vote before September 28th!

Who Has Square Feet?

“Not me!”

Or that’s what Oren would say if he cared enough to comment. Being the self centered guy he is, he’s too busy lamenting and planning his war against The Guild. You know how it goes.

In my post “The Book Cover is Here” I asked your opinion on whether Oren’s feet were too square, and the general consensus was that yes, they were. So, I’ve taken your advice and redone not only his feet, but his legs from the knees down.

Click the image for a larger view

Yeah, I had to go find reference images to look at for his feet., but I’m much happier with the result, and I think you guys will like it better too.

So, what do you think? Better? worse? you didn’t care in the first place?

P.S. There  a contest is coming at the end of September where you can win either an autographed paperback copy of Legacy of Ghosts OR a double prize pack that will include Shades of Gray and Legacy of Ghosts both.  Details are coming eventually, I promise!

After what has been a long, hot summer, autumn is finally here, and it’s brought some fun with it.

The winners of the Sharonlee Poetry Contest have been announced at the CPC! All the Judge’s choice winners will be receiving an autographed copy of Shades of Gray. A special congratulations goes out to all the participants for creating such wonderful poetry!

I found my blurb for the Legacy of Ghosts book cover and got it finished! Yay me!

Legacy of Ghosts cover 6 x 9 rough

If you’re curious, I went with “Sometimes the shadows of the past can darken the future.” It was a combination of ideas from myself, hubby and the internet. This just proves more heads are better than one.

And in case you have no idea what I’m talking about, I’ll be happy to tell you!

After the events of Shades of Gray, Katelina seeks rest and recovery at Jorick’s house by the sea. But peace is something that seems impossible to find, so long as she’s determined to stay with a vampire – and she is determined. Or is she?

Despite her growing attraction to her vampire “hero”, there are so many things she doesn’t know about him; so many secrets left hidden in the shadows. While Katelina struggles to unravel the mystery of a locked room and a faded photograph, a storm brews in the world beyond. Kateesha, a former ally, builds a secret war coven to fight the same battle as Jorick’s fledgling. But, a common enemy isn’t enough to overcome past betrayals, and the tempest explodes into a violent frenzy that may leave one of them dead, if not changed forever.

Old enemies will resurface and the past will come back to haunt both Jorick and Katelina as they’re pulled by opposing forces into a battle that neither had anticipated. Can they band together and stand strong against the waves that threaten to tear them apart, or will they loose themselves to old regrets and older guilt? And even if they can survive, is there any way to lay the memory of past mistakes to rest, or will they both be haunted by their ghosts forever?

Coming in October 2010, Legacy of Ghosts, the second installment of the Amaranthine series, plunges back into a world of blood and cruelty where the darkness hold dominion and vampires don’t sparkle.

Speaking of my husband, he is hard at work coding the new website, which will hopefully be unveiled in time for the new book. It’s a much cleaner, tidier version, and I like it better, so cross your fingers!

If you haven’t visited my new Author’s blog yet, then please stop by to enjoy sneak peeks, random vampire fun and the occasional word on self publishing. You can find it at https://joleenenaylor.wordpress.com/.

Now for the obligatory “blah, blah, go buy my books, blah, blah…”

101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire is available through Amazon Kindle for $.99 or Smashwords where you can set your own price and pay only what it’s worth to you!

Of course, if you’ve missed Shades of Gray, you can still get it through Amazon/CreateSpace for $11.00 , Amazon Kindle for $1.50 and Smashwords where you can set your own price!.

Feel like you’re missing out because you’re only on Facebook? Why not become a fan of the very cool Shades of Gray Fan Page Since Facebook has changed the way the pages work (of course) I am thinking about making an author page in the near future, so more details on that when/if it happens.

And if you’re in the market for a book cover, or book cover art, you might want to check out Coverart.JoleeneNaylor.com and see what I have to offer. This last month I completed 11 book covers:

On a side note, I can also format documents for publication on Smashwords.

Now, let’s get on to the

Random Fun

The Interesting link: Kindle Nation Daily. You want Kindle books? This site has links to kindle books – cheap Kindle books! And what’s better than cheap, except free? Oh, well they have links to those too! Go, browse.

The Lots-O-Fun link: Cartoon Doll Emporium This might be a little girly, but it;s still a lot of fun. Hundreds of flash “paper doll” applications where you can dress and accessorize, and then save. Why? I don’t know. It’s just fun, people!

The Read of the month: My Lord Hades by Stephannie Beman (from smashwords) In a world where Gods rule and Daemons are feared, Hades, the most notorious Phlegethon daemon-god to roam the ancient world, is released from his prison in Tartarus by the Olympian Zeus to aid in the war against the Titians, and then he meets Persephone, daughter of the earth goddess Demeter, and may just lose his heart.

The Music of the month: Thousand Houses An indy band from Omaha, nebraska, led by the former front man of the now defunct Blue Moon ghetto, which had success back in the 90’s and whose CD’s sell for sixty plus dollars on Amazon (seriously!). The best part about the new band isn’t that they sound a lot like Blue Moon Ghetto, or even that they’re music is great, but that you can get their first album, Inside the Wires, as a free digital download just by singing up for the newsletter. Awesome, huh?

The Video of the month: Funny Lego Spoof of Harry Potter by Adam Carlson. The name says it all. “Hermie-own, Hermie-own, Hermie-own.” yeah, those weird, zombie like voices were stuck in my head all day! And though I love professor Snape, and bearded Draco, the Weasley Twins still win in my book 😉

(if you have suggestions for the links of the month please email them to me at joleene@joleenenaylor.com – you will be credited by whatever name you choose.)

Legacy of Ghosts – the Book Cover is Here!

I finally got the book cover done a few days ago, though the spine width may need to be adjusted after the final manuscript formatting.

Both Daniel Kennedy and Ruth Anne Nordin were kind enough to offer their blurbs up or “book covers, etc”, and I took full advantage – erm, I mean, I took them seriously and used them on the back cover, so a special Thank You to both of them!

My brother’s been pretty nasty about Oren’s “square feet”, but I maintain he’s wearing square toed boots. My husband owns a pair of them, and that’s about what they look like. And yes, there will be a cemetery scene in this book, though it’s not exactly that cemetery. But, book covers aren’t meant to be exact.

So, what do you guys think? Are Oren’s toes too square? And how did the cemetery turn out? All in all, if you saw this book cover, would you pick this book up?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

The New Covey Awards

You may have heard of the New Covey Awards before. You might even know that they’re back after their hiatus. But, in case you don’t, I thought I’d post a little bit about this site and tell you how, as an Independent Author, you can use it.

The New Covey Awards were started in 2007 by Jamieson Wolf to recognize excellence in book cover design. However, it only lasted three months before it was shut down. That’s when the New Covey Awards was born and, two months later, expanded to include book trailer awards as well as cover art awards.

There are two awards given in each category. For the covers, The Most Eye Catching Cover is decided by popular vote (ie a flash poll on the left had side of the site) while Most Artistic Cover is awarded by a group of judges.  Most Intriguing Trailer is also by popular vote, done the same way, while the judges award the Most Artistic Trailer.

The idea behind this is that the awards run every month, though there has been a hiatus between September and June. But now, the awards are back.

And now the question: Why would you want to enter?

One word: Exposure. When you enter your trailer or book cover, it is listed with links to your websites and/or blogs,  as well as a synopsis of your book.  You might not win, but people who go to the site to vote will see your book, and your links, and the more places you have links, the better it is.  And who knows, maybe you WILL win, and wouldn’t that be very cool?

It’s easy to enter your book cover or trailer into the awards.

Here are the instructions for entering a books cover:
