Bid Not For My Love by Darcee Tana

Today’s excerpt comes from the Historical Romance Bid Not, for My Love by Darcee Tana

When Baron Raul of Kinsborough won a woman at a sale, he never knew, he would enter his castle with her as his bride. When Emma of Rosemund, fled from home, she never expected, she had commenced her journey to love. The first had wanted to become a Templar Knight, the second was on her way to the Abbey. But destiny had other ideas

“What happened at yer fathers?” Peter queried.

“My father wishes to see me wed. Nothing has changed much where that is concerned” Raul answered, once again bereft of emotion.

“I heard, there was disagreement” Peter remarked

“How is it, the news has reached before I did?” Raul grinned.

“Ye left yer squire behind when ye left in a rage. Yer father delivered him, just moments ago. We were about to set off with the others, when the guard saw ye both riding in. We worried a mishap had occurred to cause yer delay” Rowan filled in.

“Aye! My father, it is a wonder he did not get the bride delivered as well” Raul scoffed

“I must be getting old, Raul” Peter smiled “Ye bride is with yer father, yet yer betrothed is here with ye? What brings about this strange situation?”

“We will talk inside. For now, make sure all the guards know, that the lady is not to leave the castle. She is to be kept in sight, always. If she leaves, is taken or if anything happens to her, it will be at the cost of their lives” Raul was stern in his command. He then made his way towards the great hall.

“My Lord!” Sir Rowan called after him

“What is it, Rowan?” Raul inquired

“Does ‘our lady’ know that she is yer betrothed or have ye forgotten to inform her of it?” The question was serious, but the grin on Sir Rowan’s face could not be held back.

Raul was silent a moment and then he said “She will”

“And does she know to who she is to be betrothed to?” Sir Rowan asked

“She will” he repeated and with that reply he marched inside.

Six Sentence Sunday

From Shades of Gray

A lone figure walked slowly towards her from around the house. His hair and clothing were all black, as if he were a part of the night. He was like a shadow wraith formed from her fears, with only his pale face to give him the illusion of reality.

He came to a stop in front of her and gazed down. He was tall and broad shouldered with a slim waist.  His mouth remained a tight–lipped line, though his eyes, dark and warm, seemed to be smiling at her.

Shades of Gray is currently available on the Amazon Kindle for 99 cents as part of the Indie Authors Unite Holiday Sale. Check out this list for some other great bargains.

*What is Six Sentence Sunday? It’s a group of writers who post six sentences from one of their manuscripts (whether published or no) every Sunday. It’s an excellent way to discover new writers and new books, so check out the other entries.  This is my first week of participation, but if time allows I hope to join in regularly.

Seven Author Principles

(I am cross posting this with the Self Published Author’s Lounge because I can )

Reading a book
Recently, someone sent me an article from Tech Crunch called The Seven Principles You need to Know to Build a Great Social Product. As you may know, I’m never content to leave anything in context, and so it made me think how these principles can apply to other things, such as writing and building your online platform and presence.

1. Make Your Book Matter in a World of Infinite Supply

Just as the article states, people are inundated with a huge number of products, sites, and in our case, books on a daily basis. Why should they read your book? And how are you getting that across? When someone comes across your site, or your links, they’ll give you only seconds to catch their attention before they move on to the next product. As this article suggests, the best way to get their attention is to consistently hit on the emotions your book is supposed to create in people. Your blurb, your blog and your site should convey those feelings not only verbally, but visually. Yes, you’re a writer, but despite what they say, the cover does sell the book and the site does sell the content because people have already processed the feelings created by the colors, layouts and element arrangements before they’ve even had time to read the title of the page. So, if your books are creepy vampire books, then your content should reflect that. Sweet romance? Then there may be some pink, or “pretty” colors in your future.

2. Be the Best at One Thing

In other words, Author Branding. Stephenie has recently posted on this topic, so I’ll leave the specifics to her, and just say that author branding means you need to have something consistent across all your books. An author who writes horror erotica or violent death scenes might find it hard to then sell a Christian devotional or even a children’s book. Be mindful of your genres and content.

3. Seek out Uniqueness

This could be what makes your book unique or, as the article suggests, making people feel unique. I do believe that can carry over into the writing not by giving your readers extra content, or making them feel as though they have in hand in things. For example several authors post their works in progress in a blog. Ruth Anne Nordin springs instantly to mind, when I think of this. Her readers get to comment and make suggestions, and she listens to them. This makes her readers feel special and unique and keeps them coming back. If you can connect to your readers on an emotional level, you’re more likely to keep them.

4. Focus on your Most Important “Interaction”

As a writer your most important “Interaction” is your writing; so, make sure your book is the best it can be. Edit it and then double edit it. Check it for typos and then check it again. Have at least one beta reader look at it for consistency and believability. When it comes to your site, make your homepage count. Have the most important information easily accessible so that your readers don’t have to hunt for it. Remember people have about a three second attention span.

5. Own your story

Sure, they say there’s nothing new under the sun, and that every story has already been told, but it hasn’t been told by YOU. You make your story unique because your perspective is unique. You are like no one else on the planet, and neither is your writing, or your book. Remember that, and exploit it. Weave your experiences and knowledge in with your stories. If you used to be a nurse then make one of your characters a nurse, or set your story in a hospital instead of an expected place. Use your unique perspective to make your story unique.

6. Keep Down the Clutter

This applies not only to your writing (do you really NEED the scene where your characters discuss minty toothpaste?) but also to your website or blog. Make it all easy to navigate, clean, sharp and tight, and you’ll get repeat visitors. Have a site that is clunky, confusing or too cluttered and you’ll lose visitors.

7. Concentrate on Change

Not changing you, but changing your reader’s lives. How does your book impact them? I don’t mean that it has to be a life changing, inspirational book, but it should leave an impact of some kind. It should give them an idea, or an escape – in essence it should provide a service of some kind. What that service is depends on the kind of book you write.

And so we see that a book and a social website aren’t so very different after all. Kinda scary, huh?

Just in Case

I’m really more of a let’s-all-love-our-vampires kind of gal, but as the boy scouts say, “be prepared”.  After all, vampires are creatures of the night, and you never know when they might get a little out of hand.  And even if your vampire friend is one of those sweet, sugary, I’d-rather-die-than-drink-from-a-human sort, their friends may not be. In that case, doesn’t it make sense to be ready?

And now, thanks to The Green Dragon you can do just that! Check it out:

(filched from thegreendragon.us )

http://www.thegreendragon.us/Vampire-Stakes.html

(Isn’t that fun? I got that link from a forum on GoodReads and had to share! They have some other really cool items, like wands, skystones and tankards, but the vampire stakes were too cool!)

Of course, if you’re on a tight budget and handy with power tools, you could always make them yourself:

stolen from pbcohen.com

http://www.pbcohen.com/item-42.html

(read all the way to the end to see what they were really for – it’s pretty funny)

Now I’m not advocating vampire slaying, but I’m just saying, you never know. Better to be safe than sorry.

November Newsletter

If you’d like to get this in your inbox you can sign up at JoleeneNaylor.com
Hope your Halloween season was a great one! Yeah, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and I’m not quite ready to let it go, yet. But, alas, it is November already, so let’s get on with this newsletter!

Legacy of Ghosts, the second installment in the Amaranthine series, is finally available for purchase! You can pick up your digital copy at Smashwords or Amazon Kindle, or grab a paper back. If you’re interested in an autographed copy then drop me a line at Joleene@JoleeneNaylor.com.

Legacy of Ghosts cover - fixed

After the events of Shades of Gray, Katelina seeks peace with Jorick, but it’s hard to come by in a world shrouded in secrets and threatened by a brewing storm. Though Kateesha plans to fight the same battle as Jorick’s fledgling, a common enemy isn’t enough to overcome past betrayals, and the tempest explodes into a violent frenzy. Drawn into a deathly conflict, Jorick and Katelina must learn to overcome old regrets, or risk losing their future to the ghosts of their past.

Legacy of Ghosts, the second installment of the Amaranthine series, plunges back into a world of blood and cruelty where the darkness holds dominion and vampires don’t sparkle.

You can read sample chapters at https://joleenenaylor.wordpress.com/ in either whole chapter format or in tiny, blog sized nuggets. Yeah, I’m all about choice.

And why should DVD’s have all the fun? Check out “The Lost Chapters” – aka the “deleted” scenes from Legacy of Ghosts. i will be posting on a week for six weeks on both my Myspace and Author blogs, so stop by and enjoy a snippet of pointless vampire fun!

Now, let’s get on to the

Random Fun

The Interesting link: How Much is Inside? An old favorite of mine; How much is Inside asks the tough questions, like, how many cups of beer are in a keg? Can you really cover a car with one roll of aluminum foil? How many feet of Ramen are in a cup of Ramen noodles? Are there really 360 threads per inch in 360 thread count cotton pillow cases? or How large a puddle of blood would be created if a person bled to death in a parking lot? Among others. so, if you want to know how much is inside, then give this site a visit.

The Lots-O-Fun link: I will draw You As A Stick Man Amazing site that draws you as a stick man! Upload the picture of your choice and then wait a few moments while the masterpiece is created. You can share the image with friends, and also view a celebrity stick man gallery. (If you feel unfulfilled by this, then check out http://www.optuswhalesong.com.au/ where you can compose a song of whale noises using your keyboard. A fun time waster!)

The Read of the month: Songs of the Dead by Dawn Colclasure Songs of the Dead is a re-release of the chapbook originally published in 2003 and, with more than twenty-seven new poems, it has more than earned the title “expanded”. From poems of death and surrender, to fury and revenge, this is a poetry book to enjoy in the darkest of moods and one that anyone who’s ever “been there” will instantly empathize with.

The Music of the month: Noise Trade.com A website devoted to connecting listeners to new talent, Noise Trade offers music for free with the option to “tip” the artists. You can also enter your email address to get a free 25 song sampler in a zip file. They’ll send you an email with a download code, but when I went back the code was automatically entered.

The Video of the month: The Ornithologist Song by Jonathan Harvey. This song gets stuck in my head every time I thin of it, so it’s time I shared. A cute song about… well, ornithologists and ducks with an intro that gives a miniature lesson on how to “speak southern”.

(if you have suggestions for the links of the month please email them to me at joleene@joleenenaylor.com – you will be credited by whatever name you choose.)

Special Sale and Fun Videos!

Yeah, it’s a “two fer'” post.

First I want to announce the exciting news that Shades of Gray, previously $11.00 in paper back, is now $7.50.

That's a $3.50 savings!!

GET IT HERE

Yeah, this is that “Pro plan” I talked about, though I opted out of the extended distribution for the moment because it means I’d have to leave the price at $10.50. And,  where as it does make the books available to book stores such as Barnes and Noble or Borders, the only way my book would be there is if someone walked in, went to the counter and said, “Hey, can I get Shades of Gray by Joleene Naylor?” And if they’re doing that, then there’s a good chance that they could have just gotten the book online. In the end, with shipping and handling, they probably pay the same amount, and have it there in the same amount of time, except that they then have to go back to the bookstore to pick the book up, vs having it dropped off at their door.

I don’t know.  I might enable it later, meaning that this $7.50 thing may not be around forever. So, if you haven’t got the paper back yet, now’s the time to do it.

On a side note, I’m still waiting for the prize books to arrive. They’re supposed to be here no later than Monday, which means Wednesday for us in hicksville, so cross your fingers.

And now for the videos I promised!

I found these from random postings on the CPC Vampire vs Zombie Challenge and wanted to share them. The first one is short but hilarious:

And here’s another spoof/parody that gave me a giggle:

And as a bonus, this one isn’t exactly vampire related, but it was catchy and amused me:

The New Website is Up!

Officially announcing the new JoleeneNaylor.com – it is finally finished and online!

So what’s new about the site that makes it so exciting?

The navigation has been cleaned up with the use of sub-menu,  so it’s easier to get where you’re going, and there are some new sections – including the Legacy of Ghosts section where you can get all the info, read chapter samples, see character bios and get html code to help spread the word about the book.

101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire also has it’s own section now, including a free sample and the bonus tips for Living with a Vampire; helpful ideas no matter your relationship with the undead is.

There is also a new Cover Art Gallery, and the short stories and flash fiction have been broken up into their own pages to better accommodate the growing archive of  free reads.

All together, the site took longer to program than we anticipated, but I think it was worth it. What I want to know is what YOU think! Go take a look and let me know your opinions.

Jonathan and His Inner Zombie Converse…

Okay, maybe it’s not his inner zombie, but that’s only because it’s too busy eating brains to do much talking.

Inner Workaholic: What are you talking about? Why aren’t we working on the webcomic?

Me: Because I was going to post this the other day-

Inner Procrastinator: Yeah, we got distracted. Remember YouTube?

Inner Workaholic: Oh, yeah. All right, it’s posted, let’s get to work.

Me: No it’s not. I haven’t given anyone the link yet.

Inner HTML Ninja: LINK

Me: What’s that going to do? Why would someone click on the word “link”? It needs an intro.

Inner Gushing Person: you should all check out Jonatha’s super cool pimp blog. And I’m not just saying that because he pimped me, but because it’s really cool. It’s so cool, and funny, that I ripped him off.

Inner HTML Ninja: Check it out

Inner Blonde: What? Like, how did we rip him off?

Me: this whole “conversation with the multiple personalities” thing. He did that first. In that really funny blog.

Inner Blonde: Oh! tee-hee!

Inner Workaholic: Good. Comic time.

Me: But wait! I have a couple of thank yous, first.

Inner Gushing Person: That’s my department, thank you very much. Don’t make me contact the union.

Me: Union?

Everyone *ignores me*

Inner Gushing Person: Yes, a super special thank you  to Sharon for her fantastic review – she’s like the book review ninja! Moves so fast you don’t even know she’s been 😉

Inner HTML Ninja: LINK

Me: Um, there was already a link there…

Inner Gushing Person: I’m not done yet! Also, a thank you to  Cherie for her awesome email the other day! (She was one of the poets that won a copy of Shades of Gray in the CPC Sharonlee Poetry Contest last August.)

Me: I remember that.  There were a lot of good poems.

Inner Cry Baby: Yeah, we didn’t win *sob* Not like that Bonnie who won 2!

Me: Yes we did. We won popular vote.

Inner Workaholic: Okay, now you’re just stalling. Get to work already!!

Me: okay! Okay! Yeesh! It’s sad when you get bossed around by imaginary personalities.

Inner Boss: Hey! Who’s bossin’ who? That’s my job! Do I need to contact the union again…

Me: *runs away*

(If you read Jonathan’s blog, this makes a lot more sense! 😉 )
