 HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Poetry can warm your heart and soul this winter

As I mentioned in my last post, I feel that my heart belongs to writing but my soul belongs to poetry. I have written poetry since I was young. I wish I would have kept what I wrote but I didn’t.

I have put all my books on sale as a gift to you for all your support including my treasured book of poetry. All my works are available for just 99 cents from Nov 2014 through Jan 2015. Later, I’ll list where you can find my books.

Happy Holidays Week Two

Keeping up with my list of books for holiday gifts, this week I showcase poetry books. Last week, I pointed out two individuals for book covers and suggested how unique this gift would be for that special author or small business owner. You can click on my older posts to read those.

All this week I will be promoting poetry by Indie Authors. I have often said that my heart belongs to writing but my soul belongs to poetry.

Poetry is not as popular as in past times but there are still plenty of modern-day skilled poets, and there are many who enjoy a good poetry book.

Bonnie Mutchler is a poet but not a good one. No. She is beyond excellent and pure genius. Her works are hauntingly bewitching. And here’s the best part – her books are FREE!

Smashwords

You might have heard of Smashwords.com, but you may not know what it is, or why you should care. Never fear, I’m here to tell you!

For Readers:

Smashwords has an extensive selection of ebooks with authors whose experiences are as varied as their works. Available Ebook categories include Adventure, Children’s books, Drama,Erotica, Fantasy, Humor, Horror, Romance, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thrillers, Biographies, Reference books, Inspiration, Parenting and more.  with a Vampire)

Aside from variety Smashwords is also a good place to find eBook deals. Many books (like my Shades of Gray and 101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire) are available to “set your own price”, meaning you pay exactly what you think the book is worth.  And, for the frugal shopper, there’s a huge variety of free reads.

But, I think the absolute best thing about Smashwords are the multiple file types. eBooks are available as

Most smashwords books are also available at iTunes, kobobooks.com, barnesandnoble.com, among others, however, the set your own price does not apply on third party sites like those.

For Authors:

To start with, Smashwords is free, and, as I mentioned above, it automatically turns your uploaded document into several different formats, so that nearly every eReader on the planet can open it.  And, if your document passes the formatting standards for Premium catalog inclusion, you can opt in for distribution through other sites. Current distributors are Kobo, Barnes and Noble, Apple, Amazon, Sony and Diesel.  Or, if you prefer, you can opt out of any, or all, distributors. For instance if you use Amazon’s dtp service you may want to opt out of Kindle, or if you use Barnes and Noble’s new publishing service you may want to opt out of them.

Smashwords doesn’t do any advertising for you; they’re a distributor and YOU are the publisher. You own all the rights and you can simultaneously publish with as many other companies or POD’s (print on demand) as you like. You can also take your book off the market whenever you want without breaking a contract. Smashwords also allows you to update your files (both your cover file and your interior files) as many times as you need to.

If you want to know more, check out Smashwords.com, or stop by their FAQ page.

And, here’s a really cool video that will probably explain things much better than I ever could!

Songs of the Dead (Review)

Songs of the Dead by Dawn Colclasure

Dawn Colclasure’s dark poetry collection, Songs of the Dead, is not only dark, but passionate. Anger, fear, hurt and betrayal run under the skin of this work and shine through especially bright in poems such as No Turning Back, Deep Within and I am Madness. Colclasure examines the dark side of human nature; murder, drug use, violence, insanity and isolation. But, beyond the tales of death and darkness there’s also a message of empowerment; the voice of someone who has taken too much, for too long and has finally had enough.

Songs of the Dead is a re-release of the chapbook originally published in 2003 and, with more than twenty-seven new poems, it has more than earned the title “expanded”.  Colclasure has a flair for prose, with lines such as “walk on the moon and hear the stars breathe,” (from Death shows my Pain) and different poetry forms stop the reader from falling into a sing song rhythm of sameness and help to keep the collection fresh and interesting, page after page.

From poems of death and surrender, to fury and revenge, this is a poetry book to enjoy in the darkest of moods and one that anyone who’s ever “been there” will instantly empathize with.

Vampire Poetry

I usually keep the poems on my other blogs, but this was on topic, so….. 😉

Tonight and tomorrow at the Creative Poetry Corral I am hosting Zombies vs Vampires – a night of undead poetry fun:

I'm surrounded by zombies there, so if you're on MySpace then come and help team Vampire out! (click the banner)

Here are two of the poems I’ve posted on the site:

Walk With Me

Darkness wraps itself around you

Makes your fears and nightmares come true

In the shadows, can you feel me?

Creeping closer ‘til you can see

So you stand amazed

You can not believe

I slowly smile

And you fall down on your knees

In my casket lay

All our hopes and dreams

Now resurrected

Why is it that you scream?

Drowning in your own confusion

Your questions rising in profusion

All the prayers you cried have come true

From the grave returned to find you

And your tears they fall

Landing on the floor

Your trembling fingers

Reaching for my face once more

Whispered words of praise

Slip softly from your lips

All your desire

Burning in your unspoken kiss

Against the night I’ll raise my voice

At your feet I lay this choice

The world of death beyond this portal

Will you dance with an immortal?

Lie in your grave with me

You can’t look away

I’ll taste you’re life

Save you from life’s slow decay

Intertwined we’ll be

For eternity

Just take my hand

And walk into the night with me

*******************

Haunting Obsession

Darkness black as sinner’s tomb,

Cobwebbed shadows ‘mongst the stones

Eyes of liquid night gazed gently

On her prone and pale form

Hair as black as demon’s dreams

Shaded the features of his face

His hand reached through the shimmering darkness

To trace the gentle gown of lace

His lips drew back from silver fangs

Etched sharp beneath the moon’s pale light

And leaning towards her slender throat,

He gently took away her life

Her blood was sweet as summer honey

Warm pleasure flowing o’re his tongue

Her memories slipped through his mind

Her fragile life so soon undone

Drained dry he dropped her to the bed

Her body but an empty shell

Lifeless, staring at the ceiling

While through his veins burned living hell

Her face had haunted all his dreams

Obsession gnawing at his bones

His heart ached with the need of her

To take her for his very own

And to this end was one recourse

One way to ease this hated fervor

To kill the very thing he loved

To rid himself of her forever

But in his dreams she dances still

A shimmering ghost dressed all in white

Laughing as she calls his name

And beckons him to pale moonlight

Burned by the memory of her touch

As his soul slowly dies

Recalling how she looked in death

His soul as empty as her eyes
