Amaranthine on Twitter

twitter

As I mentioned in my previous post (Amaranthine on Pintrest ), some new Facebook policies have forced me tho think about promoting other social network options. Though Facebook is still the big one right now, MySpace used to be the top dog, and now it’s gone the way of the dodo. Who knows what may happen as Facebook continues to be more about how much we can pay them and less about social interaction.

As such, I am showcasing some networks I’m on. I mentioned Pintrest and Tsu.co already, and yes, I have a website ( http://JoleeneNaylor.com if you’ve never been there), but a website is like a poster at a subway station. Full of good information though not really a way to participate in a conversation.

As such, now seems like a good idea to start mentioning some of those other social media sites I’m on and telling you why you might like to connect with me there.

Twitter

What it is: Think the facebook stream, only with fewer cats, less pictures of random people’s dinners, and shorter posts. Much shorter posts. Twitter restricts users to no more than 140 characters per tweet. To those who say “This is too short” Twitter says “Then rephrase what you’re saying.” The object behind it was to give people quick, bite sized thoughts that didn’t take long to digest. It’s done wonders for our attention spans.

Why it’s fun: With such short posts you don’t get a lot of ranting or long personal posts in your stream. What you see a lot of are links to that content elsewhere, so it makes it easier to skip what you’re not interested in. To see someone’s tweets you follow them and they show up in your stream a microsecond after they post them. Of course, the more people you follow, the more posts you get. To combat this, rather than pulling a Facebook and hiding tweets, Twitter relies on hashtags, such as #vampire. So if as a twitter user you wanted to see tweets only about vampires you’d hop into the search box, type in hashtag (the pound sign-#) vampire and twitter will show you the tweets where people used this tag. Aside from just posting your own links or 140 character thoughts, you can also retweet people’s posts (aka share them with all your followers – it will show up as the original poster’s icon and name and just say “so-and-so retweeted this” so they know it’s not your link) and you can reply to tweets. If you’re lucky the original tweeter replies and you can have a whole conversation, just like facebook comments, only shorter.

Why you want to follow me: When I’m writing a book or a short story I like to post snippets. I also post links to my blogs, to other people’s blogs, book covers I create, and just random interesting things. And I do retweet some other interesting stuff now and then, That said, I’m not a Twitter power user. I admit, I go back and forth on twitter. I’ll use it pretty good for awhile and then I forget about it, but even when I forget my blog still posts to it automatically, so it’s not a dead account. So if that sounds like something interesting then be sure to follow me on Twitter.

And remember that newsletter I mentioned? If you do subscribe to it right now you get the first three chapters of Clash of Legends (book 7) as an apology for the publication date being pushed back – http://www.joleenenaylor.com/books/newsletter.php

Sample Sunday: Ashes of Deceit

Amaranthine – the exciting, action packed paranormal series from Joleene Naylor:

Pulled into a world of darkness, Katelina’s fate is intertwined with Jorick, a dark, enigmatic vampire. To stay by his side, she must navigate fields of intrigue, terror and bloodshed as they’re drawn from one vampire war to another. Join Katelina and Jorick in a world where vampires don’t sparkle and night is eternal.

Here’s an excerpt from book 4, Ashes of Deceit:

Katelina woke and blinked groggily. Cold air blew her hair in her face and she made to wipe it away, except that her arms didn’t work right. They weren’t the only thing. Her legs felt like lead and when she moved them nothing happened.

“She’s waking up.”

In her half coherent state it took Katelina a moment to recognize the voice. It was Kioko, the Executioner.

Executioner?

The last several hours crashed over her and she suddenly remembered. As she came to terms with the memories, she sought Jorick and found him, still unconscious, hanging over Ark’s back. She forced her eyes and mind to focus and realized she was on the runway of a rural airport, draped over Kioko’s impatient shoulder. Behind them was a small airplane and above them the sky was black; the stars blotted out by bright ground lights. A chilly mist gave the lights an otherworldly halo and made the air smell like damp, dead grass. Katelina shivered and wondered if she was in Iowa.

Probably, since we’re going to the Citadel.

Just that phrase was enough to fill her with fear. She remembered the last visit and her encounter with Malick, the head of The Guild and Jorick’s ancient master; the way he’d lain her mind bare and probed through it at his leisure. She didn’t think she could do it again.

In Ashes of Deceit Katelina and Jorick must rescue a captured vampire and discover who kidnapped him and why. The truth isn’t easy to find. As Oren’s attack on the Guild draws closer, Jorick and Katelina are led back to the Citadel. When the flames of war ignite, can they rise from the ashes, or will they be consumed?

Get the book from Smashwords AmazonKoboBarnes and Noble, or Apple or check out the Cyber Monday sale to get the Special Editions – all four books for only $6.00!

New Facebook Page!

Yeah, I finally broke down and made an author page on Facebook. After waaaay longer than I want to admit to, I think I have it all set up. By using “apps” i have added a “My Books” page as well as an rss feed of this blog, a contact me page and a twitter page – though the twitter page took a looong time to load when I tested it. Maybe it was just my connection?

Something I have been unable to do is add a *&^% video. They upload for a little bit – about 12% or so and then stop and stare at me forever. Does anyone know why it does this? It’s not a huge deal as I have youtube account(s) so I can always just link (and save myself the effort of uploading!) but the blank button is annoying me.

If you’re a facebook friend you’ve probably already been annoyed with an invite to come like the page, but if you’re not then stop by and give me a like.  Free thank you’s to the first 50 fans.

(Think about that for a second 😉 )

In future I may do contests or something with the page, but for now I am going to get back to work.

Swag Day & Sheep!

The cool swagday box...

If you haven’t been following the I Smell Sheep blog you should (for a variety of reasons) but one  the biggest is a very cool new thing they will be doing on the 10th of every month, starting in June – Swagday.

What is swagday? And hey, for that matter, what is swag? Swag is free stuff.  So what is swagday? You guessed it: Free stuff day!

To play you just head over to the I Smell Sheep blog on the 10th of June and play the author to pet matching game. (Yes, this means match the author to the picture of their pet(s).

So what’s with the picture of the box? Because the point of Swagday is to climb outside your box and try something new.  For me, my box is pretty big (sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, romance, YA, contemporary) however, I know I avoid most chick-lit like the plague.

What box do you hide in? What genre’s have you consistently steered away from and why? And, while you ponder these questions, go check out the official announcement blog on the I Smell Sheep blog!

Legacy of Ghosts Contest!

With the upcoming release of Legacy of Ghosts, book 2 in the Amaranthine series,  it’s time for a contest!

The Prizes:

Two winners, chosen by random drawing, will each win an autographed, paperback copy of Legacy of Ghosts.  One winner,  chosen by random drawing from the bonus contest entries, will receive, the Amaranthine pack: an autographed paperback copy of Shades of Gray and an autographed, paperback copy of Legacy of Ghosts.

The Technical Details:

The contest starts Friday, September 24th, 2010, and lasts until October 8th, 2010 at 11:59 pm.

You can answer all eight questions (If applicable – you’ll see what I mean) and there is no limit to the number of times you can enter the bonus contest.

Please include your name and email address with each entry.  If you prefer not to share your email address publicly, then please note so in the comment, and send the address to Joleene@JoleeneNaylor.com

To make it easier for me to count the entries, please answer only one question per comment.

Bonus contest entries can be emailed to Joleene@JoleeneNaylor.com OR you can post links in the comments below.  It may take up to 24 hours for me to comment or mail you back with confirmation, so don’t panic. If you send an email and don’t hear from me in 48 hours, please email again, as cyberspace has probably eaten it.

Yes, the more entries you have, the greater your chance of winning, as the winning names will be drawn from a hat (or a bowl, or something like that). Yeah, I could use Random.org, but where’s the fun in that?

The official drawing will be filmed and uploaded to YouTube, then posted on this blog, my MySpace and Blogger blogs on October 10th, 2010. Winners will be notified at the email address they provided, no later than the 12th of October, 2010, and will need to then send me a mailing address. I will send a second email to the winners when the prizes have been mailed.

The Contest:

Answer one (or more) of the following questions in a comment. Please, only one answer per comment, and leave your name and email address. If you prefer not to share your email address publicly, then please note so in the comment, and send the address to Joleene@JoleeneNaylor.com

1. If Shades of Gray was made into a movie, who would you choose to star in it?

2. If you could pick one character  from the Amaranthine series to hang out with who would it be?

3. If you could pick one character to “kill off” in Legacy of Ghosts, who would it be?

4.  If you haven’t read Shades of Gray, why not? If it was a free eBook, would you?

5. The great debate: Which do you prefer, paperback books, or books that you can read on a device (Kindle/Nook/etc) or books you can read on the computer (PDF/etc)?

6.  If given the chance to become a vampire, would you? Why or why not?

7. Who’s cooler? Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies, or Bat Boy?

8. If you see a free, or cheap,  eBook do you think “Cool! Cheap!” or do you think, “That must not be any good if it’s free!”?

Bonus Contest:

To enter the bonus contest, all you have to do is pimp out the contest, the book, the blog, or the website. This includes posting a banner on your website, MySpace profiles or blogs, forum signatures, etc, or making forum posts, twitter posts, facebook links, blogging, or painting the url on a t-shirt and wearing it the grocery store (okay, I don’t think that one’s going to catch on!) or anything else you can think of. You can even use the handy “Share” buttons on the bottom of this blog (You still need to let me know you’ve done it, though!)

If you’d like, you can find tags, banners and “animated bites” on the Help Spread the Word page.

But wait. What if you’ve done some pimping in the past, or you already have a Shades of Gray banner posted? Well, it counts! That’s right, it doesn’t matter if it was a week ago, or a year ago, it can count as an entry!

To enter the bonus contest, just send me a link or a screen capture of the “pimp”.

Links can be mailed to Joleene@JoleeneNaylor.com or posted in a comment below. Each unique link is worth one entry, and you can include as many links per mail/comment as you want.

Screen Capture images should be sent to Joleene@JoleeneNaylor.com, either inline or as an attachment.

To make a screen capture:

1. open the page in your browser.

2. on your keyboard press the Print Screen button. It may be abbreviated as Prt Sc, Prnt Scr, etc. Or you may need to hold the function key at the same time (My laptop is this way).

3. open an image editing program (Paintbrush will work) and choose Paste or Paste as New Image from the edit menu.

4. go to File > Save, and save your image. A JPG is best, but any image type will work.

If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments, or mail me, and I will do my best to answer them.

I’m looking forward to your entries!
